  What is normal hair loss

Normal Human scalp contains 100,000 hair. Every hair on the scalp has a life period or a life cycle . After which it is shed off and is replaced by new hair. That is the reason shedding of few strands of hair is supposed to be normal. Loosing upto 100 hair day is consider to be normal hair loss. However if the number exceeds beyond this number then it defiantly is a significant hair fall that needs treatment.

What is normal hair cycle?
Hair follicles grow repeated cycles. One can be broken down into three phases.

1. Anagen- growth phase.
2. Catagen- transitional phase.
3. Telogen- resting phase.

Anagen - Approx 85% of all hair are in the growing phase at any one time. This phase can vary from two to six years. Hair grows approximately 10 cm per year and any individual hair is unlikely to grow more than one meter long.

Catagen– Lasts for about 1-2 weeks. During this phase the hair follicles shrinks about 1/6 of the normal length . The lower part is destroyed and dermal papilla breaks away to rest below.

Telogen- (Resting phase)

Normally lasts for 5-6 weeks. During this time the hair does not grow but stays attached to the follicles. Approx 10-15 % of all hair are in this phase at one time. At the end of telogen phase the hair follicle enters the anagen phase. If the old hair has not already been shed the new hair pushes the old ones out and the growth cycle starts all over again.
